Hugh Whelchel

Hugh Whelchel is executive director of the Institute for Faith, Work & Economics, a Christian research organization committed to advancing biblical and economic principles that help individuals find fulfillment in their work and contribute to a free and flourishing society.

Whelchel graduated from the University of Florida, earned a master’s degree in theology from Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS), and is the author of How Then Should We Work? Rediscovering the Biblical Doctrine of Work (May 2012).

He possesses a unique background with experience in senior executive responsibility, creative educational administration, and technical innovation. He stepped out of a successful business career to lead RTS’s Washington DC campus, where he served as executive director and guest professor. He has served as both the executive director and board member of The Fellows Initiative, a coalition of post-graduate Christian leadership development programs established in key communities around the nation.

Whelchel has been published by The Washington Post/On Faith,, The Gospel and ByFaith magazine. He serves as an ordained ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church in America at McLean Presbyterian Church in Virginia.
